Cape Floral Kingdom

I am deeply concerned about the environment and that we may be heading for the 6th extinction. My family lived in the Eastern and Western Cape for 18 years and during this time I spent a month each year visiting them and painting this precious landscape. Some of the work is listed on this website. I aim to continue this area of interest and make more work about this region as well as similar hotspots in the UK where I live.

The Cape Floral Kingdom is the smallest of the six world floral kingdoms and a biodiversity hotspot. It is home to the greatest non-tropical concentration of higher plant species in the world and the only hotspot that encompasses and entire floral kingdom. It is located entirely within the borders of South Africa, comprising 13 protected areas in the Western and Eastern Cape. These ‘fynbos’ ecoregions are designated one of the Global 200 priority ecoregions for conservation. It is thought that the region is experiencing one of the most rapid rates of extinction in the world owing to habitat loss, land degradation and invasive alien plants.
